Trophy

I had a thirty-pound heart, but it was never what you wanted. After all, it was not something you could mount on a wall, put on display to show your friends, sell online when you needed money. I would be lying if I said I did not see it coming, but I was not afraid. I thought I was strong. I was strong because no one had ever made me weak.

You were a ruthless hunter, luring me in with your self-assured laugh and wild eyes. Before I knew it, I was a mighty elephant lying limp in the grass, blood pouring from the wounds where my proud tusks had been. But didn’t you know elephants have thick skin?

It is true that I still adore your wild eyes, but I took back my tusks, and you will never call them ivory again.
